The idea of Creation implies that Something greater exists and is responsible for all things. And as it pertains to creation God then is sovereign over what God has made. In the beginning God created. That’s all I’m saying, and that’s what the writer wants us to know. In the beginning God created.
Now to be clear this sermon is not an attempt to defend a literal seven day creation or to explain an old Earth creation story (elaborate). What I am saying is that in the beginning God created.
Created...In God’s Image (v.26-28)
Created...In God’s Image (v.26-28)
God then does something different. In the infinite wisdom of the Godhead, God decides to create something, no, someone comparable to Himself. God in communion within the Godhead says, “let us make man in Our image and Our likeness.” That we are created in God’s image should move us. We are bearers of the very image of God.
Now scripture tells us in Col 1:15 that God is invisible and that God is spirit John 4:24. So, the question must be, “In what way are we visible and tangible, yet in the image and likeness of an invisible and intangible God?” And further, there are ways in which we are nothing like God. God is omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent. We are limited in power, limited in knowledge, limited in location.
All this talk of the imago Die must do something for your self esteem. That you are in the image of God. But this should also do something for our concience on how we treat one another. It behoves me how in 2025 we are still fighthing for aganst people and systems that undermine our divine nature. That Black people and other minority groups have to (preach)...
Created...For God’s Purpose (v.28-30)
Created...For God’s Purpose (v.28-30)
Subdue it?
Dominion- stewardship, care taking.
The command to be fruitful and multiply and have dominion over the earth is in essence the command to be responsible stewards over God’s creation.
When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have set in place; What is man that You think of him, And a son of man that You are concerned about him? Yet You have made him a little lower than God, And You crown him with glory and majesty! You have him rule over the works of Your hands; You have put everything under his feet,
God has also called you to have stewardship or dominion over the things he has blessed you with.
Life- No limitations.
Created...To God’s Glory (v.1:31-2:1-3)
Created...To God’s Glory (v.1:31-2:1-3)
Let me first say, that if God rested so should you.
This portion of the creation story is the first time in the Bible do we see the term sanctified. The record is that God rested from the work of creation. That from that point on God isn’t making new things in the same manner. But, that he set the time aside to consider and appraise the work of His own hands.
Worship-
when I consider the works of your hands.
God looked at all that was done and said it is very good. Every time God created something, every day in the creation narrative the text says “it was good” But when God created us in v.31 it says “it was very Good” (preach).
Run...Very Good.
Take to the Cross so good He sent Jesus.
